How I Work
Hypnotherapy and CBT sessions are structured, collaborative, and tailored to you.
The aim is not simply to talk about problems, but to understand them clearly and begin creating practical, meaningful change from the very first session.
Your First Session
The first appointment is an introduction to both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and hypnotherapy.
We begin with a detailed case history, similar to other healthcare consultations. This helps me understand:
-
What you would like support with
-
How long it has been affecting you
-
How it shows up in your day-to-day life
-
What you would like to be different
Understanding the Pattern
Using CBT principles, we explore four key areas that maintain most difficulties:
-
Physical sensations (e.g. tension, racing heart, fatigue)
-
Emotions (e.g. anxiety, frustration, low mood)
-
Behaviours (e.g. avoidance, overworking, habits)
-
Thoughts (e.g. worry, self-criticism, negative predictions)
This helps us build a clear picture of how the problem operates.
We then begin shifting the focus toward solutions — identifying strengths, past successes, and how you would prefer to feel and respond.
The Hypnotherapy Component
Towards the end of the first session, we move into a guided relaxation exercise.
You can choose to sit comfortably in a chair or lie down — whichever feels most natural.
This initial session uses progressive relaxation and confidence-building techniques. It is designed to:
-
Help you experience hypnosis in a calm and safe way
-
Show you what it feels like
-
Begin reinforcing positive changes
You remain aware and in control throughout.
Ongoing Sessions
At future appointments, we continue building on the previous work.
Each session typically includes:
-
Further CBT work to explore new insights and reinforce progress
-
A personalised hypnotherapy session tailored specifically to you
Following each session, I adapt the hypnotherapy component based on what we’ve uncovered. Over time, different approaches may be used to find what works best for you.
Review & Progress
After a number of sessions, we schedule a review to assess progress.
This gives us the opportunity to:
-
Reflect on changes so far
-
Identify any remaining challenges
-
Decide on the next steps
Some people require only a small number of sessions focused on a specific issue, while others benefit from slightly longer-term work.
Throughout the process, the approach remains structured, collaborative, and goal-focused.
If you have any questions about how sessions work before booking, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
